Guitar Grades 1 to 8

Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) Exams

Both electric and acoustic guitar grades offer a great structure for learning and developing your knowledge and performance skills. The qualifications from the RGT are recognised by the education establishments of schools, colleges and even universities. The qualifications are of the equivalent to the following, and are measured by their value in points. Achieving a grade on the guitar can literally open up doors.

Grades 6 - 8 (UCAS points)

Grades 3 - 5 (A level points)

Grades Preliminary - 2 (GCSE points)

RGT Books and CD's

The RGT guitar playing exams are accompanied by a series of handbooks, usually with a complementary CD, from Preliminary Grade to Grade 8.

The handbooks are written specifically for the exam that you are working towards, so for example, the electric guitar playing exams have a series of handbooks tailored to that instrument.

The RGT electric guitar playing grades introduce the most basic of chords and scales for you to learn to develop your rhythm and lead guitar playing knowledge and skills. Then, as you progress through the grades, you will be introduced to barre chords, arpeggios and modal scales used in blues, rock and jazz (plus a lot more).

The RGT acoustic guitar playing grades take you through the basics with open chords and then onto barre chords. There are traditional songs and melodies to learn and perform. Covering traditional blues and folk style finger picking techniques and takes an in-depth look at strumming patterns. It is well structured and offers a different series of disciplines to the electric RGT grades.

The RGT also offers a series of theory exams and accompanying books.

Want to get graded but don’t know which grade to aim for?

A good tutor will assess the student's standard of knowledge in accordance to the RGT grading system, which will define what grade level the student should study. It is often worth studying a grade that stretches your ability. As a guideline it usually takes a period of about three months to study and prepare for the exam.

Pre Exam Guitar Lessons

During the build up to the exam I prepare the student's knowledge of each section of the RGT syllabus in detail, giving the student vision beyond the grade that they are currently sitting. Studying all techniques required so that the student can gain confidence with an assured performance, making the student aware of how to get those extra points on exam day.

Mock exams at Dominics Guitar School

Before a student sits the RGT grade exams it is advisable for the student to sit a mock exam first, highlighting any weak points the student needs to work on and, of course encouraging their strengths. The student then knows what to expect from the layout and structure of the exam and what the RGT is looking for. It helps the student become more focused and eases anxiety with regards to the exam, as there is a lot of information to cover.

RGT Exam Locations

Exams are held in a controlled and safe environment, usually at a school or village hall. The RGT attempt to find somewhere within an hour's travel of the students address.

The exam lengths vary in time depending on what grade level you are sitting, the early grades being a shorter length and the higher grades, with more content, being longer.
